Zombie Madness – Crowning The Champion

Zombie Madness – Crowning The Champion

I’ll open with a mea culpa – I should have posted this a week ago, but alas, things at the day job have been pretty hectic. Those of you juggling your passion and paying the bills will understand that conflict, but still – I left you hanging.

I also want to thank you all for playing along and voting in the 63 different matches. I was using Better Bracket Maker and I guess we hit it too much to track status because somewhere around the Elite Eight their site went down and hasn’t come back up! We broke the internet!!!

That said, let’s review how we got to where we are. We started with 64 zombie-themed movies/series that I broke into 4 different brackets; comedies, action/horror, series & sequels (where only movies that have sequels or TV series were included) and Romero/Of The Dead (all movies either directed by George Romero or containing ‘Of The Dead’ in the title.

I’ve received some guff from folks about including series in the mix here, but it felt really strange to put this together and not include things like The Walking Dead, In The Flesh or one my favorites, Dead Set. And let’s be honest – without Walking Dead, would the surge in the zombie subculture have reached the fever pitch that it has?  I also believe that had I left them out, for every person questioning why I had a TV series in the mix I would have had someone saying “how DARE you leave Walking Dead out of this!” No, I had to include these series in the mix.

I guess, then, it was fitting that one of the two finalists was The Walking Dead. In true bracket seeding style, in a 16 team bracket, the #1 team plays the #16 team, #2 plays #15, etc, down to the #8 team playing the #9 team. The intent is that the top ranked teams from each bracket end up playing each other so the final divisional games are really good matches, and the final four and championship matches should have the most evenly matched pairings. That’s exactly how I set up these brackets, using the IMDB user ratings to determine the rankings.

So it was, then, that Walking Dead was up against The Dead 2: India in round one, and it was a shutout. In round two it faced Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and again it was a 100% win for Walking Dead. In the Sweet Sixteen it faced a tough challenge, beating 28 Days Later, but only getting 60% of the votes. The Final Four paired it against the original 1978 Dawn Of The Dead. This was as close as it got, with Walking Dead eking out a win with 53% of the vote, which was enough for the win and it’s place in the finals.

On the other side of the bracket, Zombieland faced Zombie Strippers in round one, a match that it won with 100% of the vote. Next, it faced off with one of my personal favorites, Night Of The Comet. Zombieland took 91% of the vote, and 91% of the vote in the Sweet Sixteen when it faced (and beat) Juan Of The Dead. The Elite Eight paired it against the other juggernaut of the Comedy bracket, Shaun Of The Dead. This one was close, but Zombieland escaped with 61% of the people voting for it. Finally, in the Final Four, only Planet Terror stood in the way, and this one proved to be less than competitive with Zombieland getting 87% of the votes and earning it’s place in the finals.

The championship match ran over the three days from February 6th through the 8th, and it was also a close match. Zombieland had the early lead, Walking Dead caught up, then took the lead by a pretty big margin, then Zombieland staged a comeback. Alas, it was not enough to bring Columbus, Wichita and the Rules into the winner’s circle. Walking Dead won the championship with 58% of the votes. The final standings are:

  1. The Walking Dead
  2. Zombieland
  3. Dawn Of The Dead (1978)
  4. Planet Terror
  5. Resident Evil
  6. Shaun Of The Dead
  7. Day Of The Dead (1985)
  8. World War Z
  9. 28 Days Later
  10. Juan Of The Dead
  11. Night Of The Creeps
  12. Zombie

I won’t go farther back than that – particularly with the bracket website being down.  When I look at that list, I see a pretty damn good set of shows. What do you think about the way things ended up? Do you agree with these ranks or not? If we do this again and re-seed the brackets, will you play along? Sound off in the comments and let us know!

As always, zombie killers – better dead than zed!
